the zwitty ultra guide to maximizing your badwater 135 race!!
At the 2015 STYR Labs Badwater 135, one American wound up beating me . . . the overall winner, Pete Kostelnick (I finished 5th overall, with a time of 28:09). In the year since that race, I have been asked hundreds of times what strategies I used during the race. After all, while I have been in this sport for a while now, and have run 25 races of 100 miles or longer, I don't exactly look like a guy who finished 5th in one of the world's most-competitive road ultra marathons, compared to many of the other runners who started in last year's 11pm ("elite") wave. (I am 6'1'' and weighed over 190 pounds at last year's race). Some endurance running coaches believe in "secret" training workouts or "secret" race strategies (i.e., "pay me and I'll let you in on the secret.") I've never really operated that way, and for years, have written free strategy articles on various races (including this race as well as other "heat" races such as the Keys 100). And in my opinion, there are no secrets in this sport . . . just hard, intelligent training, coupled with a smart race-day strategy. |
Badwater is a unique race in that there are many strategic factors regarding the course that can make or break your race. Here -- in the below PDF -- are all my tips and strategies for each section of the Badwater 135 course. To everyone running the race this year, I wish you the best of luck and would love to see a 100% finishing rate (which -- to my knowledge -- has never happened). I hope you exceed your goals and kick some serious butt out there!
And to everyone who hopes to run Badwater in the future, I hope this guide can give you some useful pointers, as you prepare for and think about one day running this iconic race!!
